Saturday May 17th

 Time to move on again, this time to Glendalough which is in Co. Wicklow, back on the east coast, and getting up towards Dublin.  All the Irish we meet keep thanking us for bringing good weather with us and today was no exception.  I am worried though, because tomorrow has rain forecast and they might blame us for that!

We stopped at Limerick on the way, and although it is set in what appears to be quite good farming land, the city itself is fairly unattractive and appears quite depressed economically.  Not a lot to recommend it really (apologies to any Limerickians out there who might be reading this!). I spent much of the drive there trying to compose a limerick about Limerick but without much success.  There are not many rhymes for Limerick.

The drive to Glendalough took us through beautiful Irish countryside and we were pleased that the competitors in a cycling event were going in the opposite direction to us as we passed through the hills between Hollywood and Glendalough.

 As I really didn’t know much about Glendalough or its significance to our trip, I did a quick search and came up with the following:

Glendalough is a glacial valley in County Wicklow, Ireland. It is renowned for its Early Medieval monastic settlement founded in the 6th century by St Kevin, a hermit priest, and partly destroyed in 1398 by English troops. (Wikipedia

)

The English certainly appear to have a lot to answer for in Ireland. I had a walk around to take some photos in case the weather does turn tomorrow as predicted.

 I should be a lot more knowledgeable on the topic of Glendalough tomorrow as we are being given a guided tour and history lesson by Fr Rodgers, a local priest.  Stay tuned!
